Edmund Fitzgerald: 50th Anniversary Knife
A Piece of History. A Tribute to the 29.
On November 10, 1975, the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald and her entire 29-man crew were lost to a "witch of November" storm on Lake Superior. The "Mighty Fitz," loaded with taconite iron ore, vanished from radar, becoming the most legendary and tragic shipwreck in Great Lakes history.
In 1995, a historic expedition, with the support of the families, recovered the ship's bell, which now serves as a living memorial at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. During that dive, renowned historian and diver Tom Farnquist also recovered a small amount of the Fitzgerald's lost taconite cargo from the wreck site.
To honor the 50th Anniversary of the sinking, Rapid River Knifeworks has created 500 limited-edition knives. Each handle features a piece of that very taconite, respectfully inlaid into the handle.
This knife is more than a tool. It is a tangible link to the Fitzgerald and a solemn tribute to the men who went down with her. We are honored to have partnered with Mr. Farnquist to create this moving piece of Great Lakes Maritime history.
