    Beavertail Skinning Knife Breakdown

    Who's this knife for?

The Beavertail is designed for hunters who skin and process their own game in the field. The rounded, tipless blade profile is what sets this knife apart. No pointed tip means no accidental punctures through the hide while skinning deer, elk, bear, moose, or any big game animal. The wide belly and flat grind give you maximum surface contact for long, sweeping cuts between hide and meat. Whether you're field dressing a whitetail on public land or skinning out an elk at base camp, the Beavertail gives you clean separation without ruining the hide or the meat underneath. Built for the hunter who values precision skinning over brute force.

    Blade specs and steel

D2 tool steel, hardened to 58-60 HRC. D2 is known for superior edge retention and wear resistance, meaning this blade holds its edge longer through multiple animals before needing a touch-up. Full tang construction for strength and balance through heavy use. Blade length is 4 inches with a total knife length of 8 3/8 inches. Blade thickness is .175 inches, giving you a sturdy working blade that won't flex under pressure. Each blade is hand-sharpened to a working edge and ready to use out of the box.

    Handle material and grip

Available in 16+ handle options. Exotic hardwoods include Cocobolo, Arizona Desert Ironwood, Bocote, Wenge, Leopard Wood, and Zebra Wood. Domestic hardwoods include Curly Maple, Birdseye Maple, and California Buckeye Burl. Stabilized Maple Burl acrylic options come in Ocean Blue, Forest Green, Copper Country, Royal Purple, Hunter Orange, Midnight, Pearl White, and Blood Red. Elk Antler is available for a traditional look. Handle length is 4 3/8 inches. Every handle is hand-fitted with pins and contoured for a secure grip during wet, slippery field conditions. Handcrafted in Rapid River, Michigan

    Care and maintenance

RRK knives are built for hard use in the field, shop, kitchen, and everyday carry. To keep your knife performing at its best, proper care and routine maintenance are recommended.

After each use, hand wash the knife with soap and warm water, then dry it completely. Do NOT place your knife in the dishwasher. Apply a light coat of food-safe mineral oil or knife-specific blade oil after cleaning to help protect the blade and maintain the finish, especially for knives used in the kitchen or around moisture and acidic foods.

Avoid prolonged exposure to moisture, saltwater, blood, or acidic materials, and never leave the knife stored wet or dirty. For long-term storage, keep the knife in a cool, dry location and avoid storing it inside a leather sheath for extended periods.

To maintain the edge, use a leather strop or carbide sharpener between full sharpenings. Avoid power grinders or excessive heat during sharpening, as overheating can damage the blade’s heat treatment and edge retention.

Rapid River Knifeworks offers free sharpening and polishing for the life of every RRK knife. Simply ship the knife in and the team will restore the factory edge and finish. Customer is responsible for return shipping.
