    Mackinaw Hunting Knife Breakdown

    Who's this knife for?

The Mackinaw is a compact, high-performance fixed blade hunting knife designed for versatility in the field. Built by bladesmith Kris Duerson, it delivers the strength of a full-size hunting knife in a streamlined, easy-to-carry profile.

Named after the Straits of Mackinac—where Michigan’s peninsulas meet and the Great Lakes collide—the Mackinaw reflects a rugged, no-nonsense approach to outdoor use.

Ideal for field dressing deer, general camp tasks, and everyday carry in the outdoors, this knife hits the perfect balance: compact enough for all-day wear, yet durable enough for demanding work.

    Blade specs and steel

D2 tool steel, hardened to 58-60 HRC. D2 holds its edge through a full day of field dressing and processing without needing a touch-up. Blade length is 3 7/8 inches with an overall knife length of 7 7/8 inches. Blade thickness is .175 inches, giving you a sturdy working blade with enough backbone for hard use but ground for clean, controlled cuts. Full tang construction.

    Handle material and grip

Available in multiple exotic hardwood, domestic hardwood, antler, and stabilized acrylic handle options. Handle length is 4 inches. Each handle is hand-fitted and contoured for a natural grip that lets you work for hours without hand fatigue. Sized to sit comfortably in hand whether you're wearing gloves in late season or bare-handing it during early bow season. Hand assembled in Rapid River, Michigan.

    What's in the box?

Mackinaw hunting knife, fitted sheath, and care instructions. Custom laser engraving is available for logos or personalized text.

    Care and maintenance

RRK knives are built for hard use in the field, shop, kitchen, and everyday carry. To keep your knife performing at its best, proper care and routine maintenance are recommended.

After each use, hand wash the knife with soap and warm water, then dry it completely. Do NOT place your knife in the dishwasher. Apply a light coat of food-safe mineral oil or knife-specific blade oil after cleaning to help protect the blade and maintain the finish, especially for knives used in the kitchen or around moisture and acidic foods.

Avoid prolonged exposure to moisture, saltwater, blood, or acidic materials, and never leave the knife stored wet or dirty. For long-term storage, keep the knife in a cool, dry location and avoid storing it inside a leather sheath for extended periods.

To maintain the edge, use a leather strop or carbide sharpener between full sharpenings. Avoid power grinders or excessive heat during sharpening, as overheating can damage the blade’s heat treatment and edge retention.

Rapid River Knifeworks offers free sharpening and polishing for the life of every RRK knife. Simply ship the knife in and the team will restore the factory edge and finish. Customer is responsible for return shipping.

    Shipping and delivery

Orders are typically processed and shipped within 3–4 business days. Due to the handcrafted nature of RRK knives, custom laser engraving requests, and seasonal order volume, processing times may vary.

Once your order ships, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with tracking information. Shipping protection is available for purchase at checkout for added protection against lost or damaged packages during transit.

There is also an option at checkout to pick up your order in-store at no charge if you plan to be in the area. Once your order is ready, the RRK team will contact you so your knife is ready and waiting when you arrive.
