    Trout Fillet Knife Breakdown

    Who's this knife for?

The Trout Fillet is purpose-built for the stream angler who cleans their catch on the bank. Whether you're pulling brook trout out of a U.P. creek, catching rainbows on a mountain stream, or cleaning a stringer of browns after an evening hatch, this blade is sized specifically for trout-size fish. Most fillet knives are too long and too stiff for small fish. You end up fighting the blade instead of letting it work. The Trout Fillet gives you the right length and flex to make clean, precise fillets on fish in the 10 to 18 inch range without wasting meat or mangling the fillet. If you fish small water and clean your catch streamside, this is the knife you've been using a too-big fillet knife in place of.

    Blade specs and steel

X50CrMoV15 stainless steel, hardened to 55-57 HRC. X50CrMoV15 won't rust or pit from constant exposure to freshwater, fish blood, and wet hands. Blade length is 5 1/4 inches with an overall knife length of 9 1/4 inches. Blade thickness is .07 inches, the thinnest blade in the fillet lineup, giving you maximum flex to ride along the spine and rib cage of smaller fish for clean separation with minimal waste. Handle length is 4 inches. Full tang construction for control and feel on delicate cuts.

    Handle material and grip

Available in multiple handle options. Each handle is hand-fitted and shaped for a secure grip when your hands are wet, cold, and covered in slime. The 4 inch handle is proportioned for the close, controlled grip that trout filleting demands without feeling cramped. Hand assembled in Rapid River, Michigan.

    Care and maintenance

RRK knives are built for hard use in the field, shop, kitchen, and everyday carry. To keep your knife performing at its best, proper care and routine maintenance are recommended.

After each use, hand wash the knife with soap and warm water, then dry it completely. Do NOT place your knife in the dishwasher. Apply a light coat of food-safe mineral oil or knife-specific blade oil after cleaning to help protect the blade and maintain the finish, especially for knives used in the kitchen or around moisture and acidic foods.

Avoid prolonged exposure to moisture, saltwater, blood, or acidic materials, and never leave the knife stored wet or dirty. For long-term storage, keep the knife in a cool, dry location and avoid storing it inside a leather sheath for extended periods.

To maintain the edge, use a leather strop or carbide sharpener between full sharpenings. Avoid power grinders or excessive heat during sharpening, as overheating can damage the blade’s heat treatment and edge retention.

Rapid River Knifeworks offers free sharpening and polishing for the life of every RRK knife. Simply ship the knife in and the team will restore the factory edge and finish. Customer is responsible for return shipping.
